Fairhope was founded in November 1894 by a group of 28 settlers from Des Moines, Iowa. They were seeking to establish a utopian single-tax colony based on the economic principles of Henry George. The founders envisioned Fairhope as a cooperative community that would serve as a model society, free from the monopolistic practices of the era.
