History of Fairhope
-
Fairhope was founded in November 1894 by a group of 28 settlers from Des Moines, Iowa. They were seeking to establish a utopian single-tax colony based on the economic principles of Henry George. The founders envisioned Fairhope as a cooperative community that would serve as a model society, free from the monopolistic practices of the era.
-
Fairhope's single-tax system was implemented to eliminate the inequities of land ownership and speculation. Under this system, residents paid a tax based solely on the value of the land itself, not on the buildings or improvements made to it. This innovative approach attracted a variety of forward-thinking individuals, including artists, writers, and intellectuals, who contributed to the cultural fabric of the town.
-
In 1907, Marietta Johnson established the Organic School in Fairhope. This progressive educational institution was based on her belief that education should be natural and holistic, focusing on the physical, mental, and emotional development of children. The school drew attention nationwide and attracted educators and students to Fairhope, further enriching its cultural landscape.
-
The Fairhope Pier, often referred to as the 'town square,' has been a central feature of the city since its construction in 1895. It was rebuilt several times due to hurricane damage, with the latest reconstruction completed in 2006. The pier offers stunning views of Mobile Bay and is a popular spot for fishing, strolling, and community gatherings, symbolizing Fairhope's connection to its waterfront heritage.
-
The Fairhope Colony Cemetery, established in 1894, is the final resting place for many of the original single-tax colony members and other notable residents. The cemetery reflects the town's unique history and the diverse individuals who contributed to its development. It remains a place of historical significance and quiet reflection.
-
Founded in 1954, the Eastern Shore Art Center has been a cornerstone of Fairhope's vibrant arts community. It provides a space for local artists to display their work and for residents and visitors to engage with the arts through exhibitions, classes, and events. The center underscores Fairhope's long-standing commitment to fostering creativity and cultural expression.
-
Since 1951, Fairhope has hosted the annual Arts & Crafts Festival, which draws thousands of visitors each year. This three-day event showcases the work of artists and craftsmen from across the country, offering a diverse array of handmade items. The festival not only supports the local economy but also reinforces Fairhope's reputation as a cultural hub on the Gulf Coast.
-
Located in the historic 1928 Spanish Mission-style building that once served as Fairhope's city hall, the Fairhope Museum of History offers a comprehensive look at the city's past. Exhibits cover a range of topics, from the founding of the single-tax colony to Fairhope's development as a cultural and artistic center. The museum plays a crucial role in preserving and sharing the unique story of Fairhope.
