Discover more about Fairhope Museum of History

Located in the heart of downtown Fairhope, the Fairhope Museum of History provides an engaging and informative presentation of the city's interesting past. Housed in the historic, circa 1928 Spanish mission-style building that once served as City Hall, the museum offers a glimpse into Fairhope's unique origins and evolution. The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of topics, including Fairhope's founders, the Single Tax theory, the town jail, and the Jubilee phenomenon. Visitors can explore permanent exhibits showcasing Fairhope's history, as well as changing exhibits on topics such as the Civil War in Baldwin County and the history of pottery on the Eastern Shore. The museum also features artifacts and memorabilia related to Fairhope's past, including photos, pottery, Civil War artifacts, Native American artifacts, and items from WWII. Fairhope was founded in 1894 as a utopian single-tax colony by the Fairhope Industrial Association, a group of followers of economist Henry George. The founders sought to create a community free from private monopoly, with equality of opportunity and the full reward of individual efforts. The single-tax system, based on taxing land value, aimed to eliminate disincentives for productive land use and retain land value for the community. Over time, Fairhope transitioned from a utopian experiment to an artist's colony and a resort town. Today, it is a thriving community that continues to attract visitors with its pleasant climate, inspiring scenery, and rich history. The museum is an active participant in the cultivation of community. It exists, thanks largely in part, to the individual artifacts donated by members of the public.
