Historic Blakeley State Park: Where History and Nature Converge

Historic Blakeley State Park, located in Spanish Fort, Alabama, offers a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty. The park spans over 2,100 acres and encompasses the site of the last major battle of the U.S. Civil War, the remnants of the early Alabama town of Blakeley, and traces of American Indian settlements. Founded in 1814, the town of Blakeley quickly grew into a major commercial center, even rivaling Mobile in size during the 1820s. However, a combination of economic factors and devastating yellow fever epidemics led to its decline. By the time of the Civil War, only a few dozen families remained. Today, visitors can explore the ghost town, with remnants of the original streets and foundations of buildings. The park also preserves the site of the Battle of Fort Blakeley, which took place on April 9, 1865. This battle was one of the last major engagements of the Civil War. Visitors can view miles of well-preserved Confederate and Union fortifications. The park also includes the USCT Heritage Trail, which highlights the contributions of African-American soldiers during the Civil War. In addition to its historical attractions, Historic Blakeley State Park boasts a diverse natural environment. Situated on the Tensaw River delta, the park is home to a variety of wildlife, including alligators, black bears, turtles, and bald eagles. Over 20 miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails wind through the park's woodlands. Boat tours are available, offering visitors a chance to explore the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and observe its unique ecosystems.
