Discover more about Sand Island Lighthouse

The Sand Island Lighthouse, located approximately three miles south of Dauphin Island at the mouth of Mobile Bay, Alabama, is a historic beacon that has weathered countless storms and witnessed significant events in Gulf Coast history. The island itself, once exceeding 400 acres, has diminished to a small patch of land due to relentless erosion, making the lighthouse appear to rise directly from the sea. The first lighthouse on Sand Island was constructed in 1838 by Winslow Lewis. Confederate soldiers destroyed it in 1863 to prevent Union soldiers from using it as a lookout. A temporary wooden tower was erected in 1864, followed by the current lighthouse, which was completed and lit in 1873. Over the years, the lighthouse faced constant threats from hurricanes and erosion, leading to several restoration efforts. Granite blocks and stainless steel cables were added to protect the island, and in 2011, a project added sand around the lighthouse, though Hurricane Isaac washed it away the following year. Despite these challenges, the Sand Island Lighthouse remains a significant landmark and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Alabama coast. Although the lighthouse is no longer operational, its image is a reminder of the area's rich maritime history.
