Getting There

Driving

From downtown Huntsville, take Governors Drive (Highway 431) east towards Monte Sano Mountain. Follow Governors Drive up the mountain until you reach the intersection with Monte Sano Boulevard. Turn left onto Monte Sano Boulevard and continue for approximately 2.5 miles. Turn right onto Nolen Avenue, and follow it for one mile to the park entrance. The entrance fee is $5 per adult, $2 for children (ages 4-11) and seniors (62+), and free for children 3 and under. A maximum of $20 fee applies for standard passenger vehicles.
Public Transport

While there is no direct public transportation to Monte Sano State Park, you can take a Huntsville city bus to a location on Governors Drive near the base of the mountain. From there, you could take a taxi or ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft to the park entrance. Rising over 1,600 feet above sea level on the east side of Huntsville, Alabama, the park encompasses 2,140 acres of mountaintop and slopes.In the 19th century, Monte Sano gained popularity as a health retreat, with visitors seeking relief from diseases like diphtheria, cholera, and yellow fever. The Hotel Monte Sano, a luxurious Queen Anne-style resort, opened in 1877, offering a cool climate and fresh spring water. Although the hotel closed in the early 1900s, the tradition of health and recreation continued.In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed Monte Sano State Park, constructing roads, trails, cabins, and other structures. Today, visitors can still enjoy the park's historic CCC-built cabins, which feature hand-crafted stone fireplaces and original wood flooring.Monte Sano State Park offers a variety of activities and amenities, including over 22 miles of hiking and biking trails for all skill levels.
