Discover more about Natural Well

Natural Well, a captivating geological formation within the Monte Sano Nature Preserve near Huntsville, Alabama, presents a compelling mix of natural beauty and intriguing history. More accurately described as a large vertical shaft cave, this impressive sinkhole plunges dramatically into the earth, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the region's geological history. The Natural Well is a testament to the power of water and time, slowly carving away at the soluble limestone bedrock to create this awe-inspiring formation. Over countless years, rainwater, slightly acidic from absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and soil, has dissolved the limestone, gradually widening and deepening the shaft. This process, known as chemical weathering or dissolution, is responsible for the formation of many of the caves and sinkholes found in the region. The well itself drops approximately 150 feet into the earth. Some historical accounts cite depths of up to 350 feet. Historically, the area surrounding Natural Well has been a point of interest for both locals and visitors. In the late 19th century, Monte Sano Mountain gained recognition for its purported health benefits, leading to the establishment of the Monte Sano Hotel, a grand health spa. Early Huntsville city directories mentioned the Natural Well as a 'great curiosity'. Today, the Natural Well is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The Land Trust of North Alabama maintains a network of trails in the Monte Sano Nature Preserve, including the Natural Well Trail, which leads directly to the well. The trail is considered moderately challenging, with some rocky sections and changes in elevation. The well itself is fenced off for safety, preventing accidental falls into the shaft.
