    From downtown Huntsville, take Governors Drive SE up Monte Sano Mountain. Follow Governors Drive to the top, then turn left onto Monte Sano Boulevard. Continue for approximately 2.5 miles, then turn right onto Nolen Avenue SE. Follow Nolen Avenue for 1 mile to reach the park entrance. Parking is readily available near the main park area and trailheads. The entrance fee is $5 per adult, $2 for kids (4-11) and seniors (62+), and free for kids 3 and under. A maximum of $20 is charged per standard passenger vehicle. Parking is included in the entrance fee.

Monte Sano State Park, whose name translates to “Mountain of Health” in Spanish, has been a destination for those seeking natural beauty and recreation for centuries. Rising over 1,600 feet above sea level on the east side of Huntsville, Alabama, the 2,140-acre park offers a diverse landscape with scenic overlooks.In the 19th century, Monte Sano gained popularity as a health retreat, with visitors flocking to the mountain to experience its fresh air and mineral springs. The Hotel Monte Sano, a luxurious resort, opened in 1877 and offered amenities such as bowling, horseback riding, and croquet. Although the hotel eventually closed, the tradition of Monte Sano as a place of healing and rejuvenation remained.During the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed Monte Sano State Park, constructing rustic cottages, a lodge, and an amphitheater. Today, visitors can still enjoy these historic structures, as well as a wide range of outdoor activities. The park boasts over 22 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of biking trails for all skill levels. Campers can choose from primitive tent sites, water/electric sites, or full hook-up sites, or stay in one of the park's 14 CCC-built cabins.Other attractions within the park include the Von Braun Astronomical Society's planetarium and observatory, offering educational programs and stargazing opportunities. The park also features picnic areas, playgrounds, and the Monte Sano Lodge, a popular venue for meetings and events. With its rich history, stunning scenery, and diverse recreational opportunities, Monte Sano State Park offers a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
