    From anywhere on Dauphin Island, follow Bienville Boulevard (AL-193) east. Fort Gaines is located at the very eastern tip of the island. Parking is available near the entrance.

Established in 1821 and completed in 1861, the fort's well-preserved ramparts have guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay for over a century and a half.Named after General Edmund Pendleton Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812, Fort Gaines is best known for its role in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the American Civil War. It was here, within sight of the fort's walls, that Union Admiral David G. Farragut famously declared, "Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!" The fort fell to Union forces after a siege in August 1864.Today, visitors can explore the fort's grounds and immerse themselves in history. Highlights include original cannons, five pre-Civil War brick buildings, an operational blacksmith shop, kitchens, a museum, a gift shop, and tunnel systems. Guided tours, often led by guides in period costumes, bring the fort's stories to life, sometimes including cannon firing and blacksmithing demonstrations.Fort Gaines is also recognized as one of America's most endangered historic sites due to ongoing shoreline erosion, making its preservation all the more critical.
