Historic Blakeley State Park, a sprawling 2,100-acre sanctuary near Spanish Fort, Alabama, blends rich history and ecological diversity. Situated on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, often called 'America's Amazon' for its abundant wildlife, the park offers a unique combination of natural beauty and historical landmarks. The park encompasses the site of the last major battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Fort Blakeley, and the remnants of the once-thriving town of Blakeley. Founded in 1814, Blakeley was a major Alabama city in the 1820s, even rivaling Mobile in commerce, before succumbing to yellow fever epidemics and economic decline. Visitors can explore miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails, as well as well-preserved Confederate and Union fortifications. Walk the original streets of the ghost town, and visit the Blakeley Cemetery, with graves dating back to the early 1800s. Other attractions include the Gatra Wehle Nature Center, the Delta Explorer boat tours, and the USCT Heritage Trail. The park also hosts Civil War reenactments and living history demonstrations.
