Completed in 1860 for Captain Charles G. Richards, a steamboat captain, and his wife, Caroline, this Italianate-style house remained a family residence until 1946. The house is celebrated for its elaborate cast-iron veranda, featuring allegorical figures representing the four seasons. Inside, visitors can admire the curved cantilevered staircase, marble mantels, original bronze chandeliers, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The museum is furnished with period antiques, offering a glimpse into upper-class residential life in 19th-century Mobile. The only original piece of furniture is the Weber box grand piano in the entry hall. Since 1973, the house has been operated as a museum by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The 10,000-square-foot house includes a traditional brick courtyard and formal gardens. The intricate metalwork wraps around the front porch and sidewalk.
