Spanish Plaza Park: A Tribute to Mobile's Spanish Heritage

Spanish Plaza Park, located in the heart of Mobile at 401 Government Street, stands as a tribute to the city's rich Spanish heritage. The park was created to honor Mobile's sister city, Malaga, Spain, and to recognize Spain's historical influence on the region. Opened in 1969, the park commemorates the period from 1780 to 1813 when Spanish forces captured Mobile during the American Revolution and retained control for 33 years. The plaza features a central fountain surrounded by ten arches, each representing a city that significantly contributed to the exploration and founding of the United States. Dominating the plaza is a duplicate statue of Isabella la Catolica, the Queen of Spain who sponsored Christopher Columbus's voyages. The original statue was created for the Spanish Pavilion at the New York World's Fair in 1964. Plaques and sculptures throughout the park honor other prominent Spanish figures, including Bernardo de Galvez, who led the Spanish capture of Mobile from the British during the American Revolution, and Hernando De Soto, who explored the Southwest and discovered the Mississippi River. The park also features a marble mosaic coat of arms of Spain. Visitors can stroll through the park, admire the statues and artwork, and reflect on the historical connections between Mobile and Spain.
