Cathedral Caverns State Park: An Underground Wonderland

Cathedral Caverns State Park, nestled in Kennamer Cove, Alabama, is a 493-acre natural history preserve and recreation area that promises an unforgettable subterranean adventure. Originally known as Bats Cave, the caverns were developed as a tourist attraction in the 1950s and officially became a state park in 2000. The centerpiece of the park is Cathedral Caverns, a karst cave renowned for its massive entrance, measuring 126 feet wide and 25 feet high – potentially a world record for commercial caves. Inside, visitors are greeted by a mesmerizing display of geological wonders, including 'Goliath,' one of the world's largest stalagmites, standing 45 feet tall with a circumference of 243 feet. The cave maintains a comfortable 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making it an ideal destination regardless of the season. The public portion of the cave extends along wheelchair-accessible concrete walkways for approximately 3,500 feet, with about 2 miles of paths to explore. During the Civil War, the Kennamer family even took refuge in the cave after their home was burned down. The cave was operated as a tourist attraction by Jacob Gurley from 1955 to 1974 and was later sold to the state of Alabama in 1987.
