Discover more about Cathedral Caverns State Park

Cathedral Caverns State Park, nestled in Kennamer Cove, Alabama, is a 493-acre natural history preserve and recreation area that promises an unforgettable subterranean adventure. Originally known as Bats Cave, the caverns were developed as a tourist attraction in the 1950s and officially became a state park in 2000. The centerpiece of the park is Cathedral Caverns, a karst cave renowned for its massive entrance, measuring 126 feet wide and 25 feet high – potentially a world record for commercial caves. Inside, visitors are greeted by a mesmerizing display of geological wonders, including 'Goliath,' one of the world's largest stalagmites, standing 45 feet tall with a circumference of 243 feet. Other notable formations include the 'Frozen Waterfall,' a massive flowstone formation resembling a frozen cascade, and the 'Stalactite Forest,' an area densely packed with countless stalactites. The cave maintains a comfortable 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, making it an ideal destination regardless of the season. The public portion of the cave extends along wheelchair-accessible concrete walkways for approximately 3,500 feet, with about 2 miles of paths to explore. Beyond the caverns, the state park offers additional attractions, including hiking trails that wind through the scenic landscape. These trails range from easy to moderate, providing stunning views of the surrounding area. Gemstone mining is another popular activity, where visitors can sift through mining dirt to uncover various gemstones. Cathedral Caverns has a rich history, with archaeological excavations revealing Native American occupation dating back as far as 7000 BCE. During the Civil War, the Kennamer family even took refuge in the cave after their home was burned down. The cave was operated as a tourist attraction by Jacob Gurley from 1955 to 1974 and was later sold to the state of Alabama in 1987. Whether you're marveling at the grandeur of Goliath, exploring the hiking trails, or trying your luck at gem mining, Cathedral Caverns State Park offers a unique and memorable experience for all.
