Discover more about Land Trust of North Alabama: Three Caves

Nestled within the Land Trust of North Alabama's Monte Sano Nature Preserve, Three Caves offers a glimpse into Huntsville's industrial past. Originally known as Hermitage Quarry, the site was mined for limestone in the mid-20th century, providing materials for the city's rapid development. The 'room and pillar' mining technique resulted in three large, cave-like openings, which give the site its name. While visitors can no longer enter the cave openings due to safety concerns, a 0.26-mile loop trail encircles the quarry, providing panoramic views of the dramatic landscape. Interpretive signage along the trail tells the story of the site's history, geology, and ecology. The trail also connects to a larger network of hiking trails within the Monte Sano Nature Preserve. Three Caves has also become a unique venue for special events, including concerts and the annual 'Moon Over Three Caves Dance'. The natural acoustics and stunning visual backdrop of the limestone cliffs create a magical experience. The Land Trust of North Alabama uses proceeds from these events to support its conservation efforts.
