Opelika Municipal Park: A Community Hub with a Nostalgic Heart

Opelika Municipal Park, also known as Monkey Park, has been a cornerstone of community life since its opening in 1955. The park's origins trace back to the generosity of I.J. Scott Sr. and Winston Smith T Sr., who donated land for its creation. W.J. "Bill" Calhoun, the first director of Opelika's Board of Parks and Recreation, played a pivotal role in developing the park, envisioning it as a recreational haven for families and individuals. One of the park's most iconic features is the Rocky Brook Rocket, a miniature train that has delighted visitors for generations. The train, a 1:16 scale replica of diesel trains, was financed by local civic groups and named after the creek that meanders through the park. For a small fee, visitors can enjoy a nostalgic ride through the park's scenic landscapes. The train operates seasonally, with special events like the Reindeer Express during the Christmas season. Adding to the park's allure is the Salem-Shotwell Covered Bridge, a historic structure relocated to the park in 2007. Originally built in 1900, the 43-foot-long bridge is a testament to Alabama's rich history. Although it was destroyed by a fallen tree in 2005, it was meticulously rebuilt and is now maintained by the Opelika Kiwanis Club and the City of Opelika. While the park was once home to a "Monkey Village" with spider monkeys, they were moved to the Montgomery Zoo in 1980. Today, a wooden monkey statue serves as a reminder of this unique chapter in the park's history. Municipal Park continues to be a popular gathering spot, offering a variety of amenities, including playgrounds, picnic shelters, and a gazebo. The park also hosts events like the Summer Swing Concert Series, providing entertainment for the community.
