The Kreher Preserve & Nature Center (KPNC), formerly the Louise Kreher Forest Ecology Preserve, is a 120-acre sanctuary dedicated to environmental education, recreation, and outreach. Established in 1993 through a donation by Dr. Louise Kreher Turner and her husband, Frank Allan Turner, the KPNC is managed by Auburn University's School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences. The Turners wanted to ensure their land remained a natural space for the community to appreciate and learn about the natural world. The KPNC features seven distinct natural habitats, including a Longleaf Pine Demonstration Forest, Wildflower Trail, Boulder Ridge, and a Butterfly and Vegetable Garden. Visitors can explore over five miles of hiking trails that wind through diverse terrains, catering to both novice and experienced hikers. Interpretive kiosks are placed throughout the preserve, offering educational information about the points of interest. Amenities at the KPNC include the Frank Allen Turner Amphitheater, a 150-seat multi-level meeting area, and a covered educational pavilion. A nature playground provides a space for children to explore naturalistic play structures. The preserve also hosts various environmental education programs, workshops, and events throughout the year. Currently (July 2025), the KPNC is constructing a new Environmental Education Building, expected to be completed in the summer. During construction, parking may be limited, with overflow parking available at the nearby Embrace Church.
