Getting There

Driving

Dismals Canyon is located at 901 County Road 8, Phil Campbell, AL 35581. From Russellville, Alabama, take US-43/AL-17 south towards Hamilton. Turn right onto County Road 8. The canyon will be on your right. Parking is free, but the lot is small and can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. If the lot is full, you may have to park along the road.
Walking

From the parking area, a short trail leads to the visitor's center and country store, where you'll need to register and pay the admission fee. From there, the entrance to the canyon floor is down a series of stairs. Be prepared for a steep descent. Once on the canyon floor, the 1.5-mile loop trail is well-marked. Follow the trail to experience the highlights of Dismals Canyon.

Dismals Canyon, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Phil Campbell, Alabama, is an 85-acre privately-owned natural conservatory designated as a National Natural Landmark. This unique destination offers visitors a chance to step back in time and explore a primeval sunken forest filled with geological wonders and ecological treasures.The canyon's formation dates back millions of years, with massive house-sized boulders scattered throughout, creating a labyrinth of caverns, grottos, and small slot canyons. A 1.5-mile hiking trail on the canyon floor follows Dismals Branch, a winding stream that roars into the canyon through Rainbow Falls. Along the trail, hikers encounter sky-reaching boulders, thundering waterfalls, natural bridges, and a diverse array of plant life, including ferns, mosses, and giant trees. Points of interest along the trail include Rainbow Falls, Grotto, Weeping Bluff, Temple Cave, Fat Man's Misery, Champion Tree, and Secret Falls.Dismals Canyon boasts a rich human history, having been inhabited by Paleoamericans nearly 10,000 years ago. Artifacts found within the canyon's bluff shelters and grottos reveal the presence of various Stone-Age cultures. In 1838, U.S. Troops rounded up Chickasaw Native Americans and held them in the canyon for two weeks before forcing them on the Trail of Tears.One of the canyon's most enchanting features is the presence of Dismalites (Orfelia fultoni), bioluminescent fly larvae that emit a mesmerizing blue-green glow. These glow worms, unique to only a few locations worldwide, can be observed on guided night tours, creating an ethereal spectacle as they light up the canyon walls. The best time to see them is April-May and September-October. During the day, you can explore the canyon's geological formations, waterfalls, and lush greenery.
