Discover more about Kenworthy Hall

Kenworthy Hall, also known as the Carlisle-Martin House, stands as a testament to antebellum grandeur and architectural ingenuity. Located just west of Marion, Alabama, this plantation house, built between 1858 and 1860, is one of the best-preserved examples of Richard Upjohn's asymmetrical Italian villa style. Edward Kenworthy Carlisle, a successful cotton factor, commissioned the home, seeking a design that would reflect his status and set him apart from his neighbors.Upjohn, a New York architect known for his churches and interest in functional domestic architecture, adapted the Italian villa style to suit the Southern climate and plantation lifestyle. The result was a unique design featuring a four-story tower, varied window sizes, and a layout that separated family and public spaces. Key adaptations included a wide cross hall for ventilation, a detached kitchen, and a spacious back veranda. The house is constructed of brick, including the interior walls, and originally had a standing-seam terne roof.Inside, Kenworthy Hall boasts soaring ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and period furnishings. The interior arrangement is complex, with rooms of various shapes and sizes playing off the axial hallway. The circulation pattern clearly separates private family spaces from public areas. The house also features built-in corner bookcases, a wine closet, paneled doors with faux finishes, and marble mantelpieces.Kenworthy Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 and declared a National Historic Landmark in 2004. It is also rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl named Sallie Kenworthy, adding to its mystique. Visitors can explore the mansion and grounds, taking a guided tour to learn about the Kenworthy family and the enslaved people who once lived and worked on the property.
