Dismals Canyon, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Phil Campbell, Alabama, is an 85-acre natural conservatory designated as a National Natural Landmark. This unique destination offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the beauty of an untouched, primeval landscape.The canyon's geological history dates back approximately 300 million years to the Paleozoic Era. Over time, draining waters carved a canyon and gorge system, leaving behind a stunning array of sandstone-sheltered grottos, waterfalls, natural bridges, and giant moss-covered boulders. A 1.5-mile hiking trail winds through the canyon floor, following Dismals Branch, a stream that flows through Rainbow Falls. Along the trail, you'll encounter notable landmarks such as Rainbow Falls, Secret Falls, Grotto, Weeping Bluff, Temple Cave, and Fat Man's Misery.Dismals Canyon has a rich human history, serving as a sanctuary for Native American tribes for nearly 10,000 years. Artifacts discovered among the bluff shelters and grottos reveal the presence of Paleo, Cherokee, and Chickasaw cultures. In 1838, the canyon served as a holding place for Chickasaw Native Americans before their forced removal along the Trail of Tears.One of the canyon's most enchanting features is the presence of Dismalites (Orfelia fultoni), bioluminescent fly larvae that emit a bright blue-green light. These glowworms, closely related to those found in Australia and New Zealand, thrive in the canyon's humid environment and are a unique attraction for nighttime visitors.
