Clarkson Covered Bridge, River Region Travel Guide

Nestled in Cullman County, Alabama, the Clarkson Covered Bridge is more than just a bridge; it's a portal to a bygone era. Constructed in 1904 over Crooked Creek, it was initially named after James W. Legg, a local mail carrier who owned the property and recognized the need for improved transportation, even supplying many of the materials. The bridge is a Town lattice truss construction, characterized by its intricate network of diagonally crisscrossed timbers, a design popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries for its strength and efficiency.In 1921, disaster struck when a flood tore the bridge in two. However, the community rallied to rebuild it the following year, utilizing salvaged materials and the expertise of a contractor hired by Cullman County. The covered bridge served vehicular traffic until 1962 when a nearby concrete bridge was constructed. Recognizing its historical significance, the Cullman County Commission restored the bridge in 1975 as part of the American Bicentennial Project and created Clarkson Covered Bridge Park around it.The park includes a gristmill and a log cabin, adding to the historical ambiance. Visitors can enjoy walking paths, picnic areas, and the serene beauty of Crooked Creek. The park is open from daylight hours to sunset, offering a peaceful retreat. The bridge is also near the site of Civil War skirmishes that took place at Crooked Creek and Hog Mountain. Today, the Clarkson Covered Bridge stands as the only remaining covered bridge in Cullman County and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
