Magnolia Grove: A Step Back in Time

Magnolia Grove, located in Greensboro, Alabama, is a historic house museum that provides a window into the past. Built around 1840, this classic Greek Revival mansion was the home of Colonel Isaac Croom and later the boyhood home of Richmond Pearson Hobson, a naval hero of the Spanish-American War. The house is named for the 15-acre grove of Southern magnolias in which it stands.The two-story home exemplifies Greek Revival architecture, featuring a stuccoed facade with a monumental hexastyle portico and Doric columns. Inside, visitors can admire original heart pine floors, ornate plasterwork, and period furnishings. The site also includes a detached kitchen and a slave house, offering a glimpse into all aspects of life during the antebellum period.Magnolia Grove offers guided tours of the house and grounds, including the formal gardens designed in the 1850s. The property was deeded to the state of Alabama in 1943 to serve as a memorial to Richmond Pearson Hobson. Today, it is operated by the Alabama Historical Commission and serves as a testament to the social and economic history of the region.
