Belle Mont Mansion, constructed between 1828 and 1832, is a striking example of Palladian architecture in the American South. Built for Dr. Alexander Williams Mitchell, a physician and planter, the mansion was intended as the centerpiece of his vast cotton plantation. The design is believed to have been influenced by Thomas Jefferson's architectural style, reflecting neoclassical elements popularized during the Italian Renaissance.The mansion features a two-story central section flanked by one-story wings, creating a U-shaped structure with a semi-enclosed rear courtyard. This layout, along with the red brick construction, exemplifies the Jeffersonian architectural ideals of the time. Although the original architect remains unknown, the mansion's design suggests a direct connection to Jeffersonian principles.Inside, Belle Mont is furnished with period antiques, offering visitors a glimpse into the lives of the Mitchell and Winston families, who owned the plantation for many years. The two-story north entrance salon is flanked by a formal dining room and parlor, while four bedrooms surround the south courtyard.
