Monte Sano State Park, meaning "Mountain of Health" in Spanish, invites visitors to explore its rich history and natural beauty. In the late 1800s, the mountain was a popular health retreat, drawing visitors seeking the area's fresh air and mineral springs. The historic Hotel Monte Sano, a luxurious health resort, once stood here, offering amusements like bowling and horseback riding.
In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed the park, constructing rustic cottages, an amphitheater, and a lodge, many of which still stand today. The park officially opened in 1938 and was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1996.
Today, Monte Sano State Park offers a diverse range of activities. Explore over 20 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of biking trails , suitable for all skill levels. Discover the North Alabama Japanese Garden, a serene oasis with a tea house, bamboo trail, and a haiku path. Enjoy camping in one of the park's modern campsites or rent a rustic cabin for a cozy getaway. The park also features picnic areas with scenic overlooks, a playground, and the Von Braun Astronomical Society's planetarium and observatory.

Getting There
Driving
Monte Sano State Park is located atop Monte Sano Mountain, accessible via Nolen Avenue SE from Monte Sano Boulevard. From downtown Huntsville, take Governors Drive SE/US-431 N up the mountain. Turn left onto Monte Sano Boulevard, then right onto Nolen Avenue SE. Follow Nolen Avenue for approximately 1 mile to the park entrance. Parking is available in various lots throughout the park, including near the lodge, picnic area, and trailheads. Daily entrance fee is $5 per adult (ages 12+), $2 per child (ages 4-11) and senior (ages 62+). Active military/veterans are free with ID. A maximum of $20 per standard passenger vehicle applies.
Public Transport
While direct public transportation to the park is limited, Huntsville's Orbit bus system has several routes throughout the city. From the Huntsville Transit Center, a taxi or ride-sharing service is required to reach the park entrance, approximately 6 miles away. A taxi fare would be approximately $18-$20. The Orbit bus fare is $1.50 per ride.
