Discover more about Toomer's Oaks

Toomer's Corner is more than just an intersection; it's the symbolic heart of Auburn, Alabama, where the city and Auburn University meet. Located at the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue, it embodies Auburn's traditions, history, and community spirit. The corner is named after Sheldon Toomer, a former Auburn halfback and state senator who founded Toomer's Drugs in 1896. This iconic drugstore has been an Auburn landmark for over 130 years. Toomer's Drugs was the first establishment in the city with a telegraph. When Auburn's football team played away games, Toomer's employees would receive news of a win and throw ticker tape from the telegraph onto the power lines outside the store to share the joyous news with the town. Over time, the ticker tape tradition evolved into 'rolling' the corner with toilet paper after Auburn victories. Fans would hurl rolls of toilet paper into the oak trees at the corner, creating a sea of white. The original oak trees, estimated to be around 80 years old, were poisoned in 2010 and removed in 2013. New trees were planted in 2015, with replacements in 2017, and the tradition continues with the new trees that currently inhabit Toomer's Corner. Toomer's Drugs is also known for its famous fresh-squeezed lemonade, a must-try for anyone visiting Auburn.
