Discover more about Nickajack Cave Wildlife Refuge

Nickajack Cave Wildlife Refuge is a captivating destination steeped in both natural beauty and rich history. Located near New Hope, Tennessee, the refuge centers around Nickajack Cave, a vast cavern partially submerged by the creation of Nickajack Lake in 1967. This unique environment provides a critical habitat for the endangered gray bat, hosting a maternity roost where thousands of female bats gather each spring to give birth and raise their young. Historically, Nickajack Cave has served various purposes. It was once a shelter for Native Americans, including the Chickamauga Cherokee, and later a hideout for river pirates. The cave also served as a source of saltpeter, a key ingredient in gunpowder, during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. In the early 20th century, there were attempts to develop the cave as a tourist attraction, even featuring a dance floor inside. Johnny Cash also visited the cave in 1967. Today, the cave is managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) as a non-game wildlife refuge. While the cave interior is closed to the public to protect the bat population, visitors can witness the spectacular sight of the bats emerging from the cave at dusk between late April and early October. An observation platform is accessible via a boardwalk from the Maple View Recreation Area, offering a prime viewing spot. Alternatively, many visitors choose to paddle to the cave entrance by kayak or canoe for a closer look. The Maple View Recreation Area also offers a swimming beach, picnic area, and boat ramp.
