Getting There

Walking

From the downtown square in Tuskegee, head northwest on S Main St towards the downtown Square, turn left onto W Oak St, then turn right onto S Elm St. The Tuskegee History Center/Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center will be on the right.
Public Transport

Macon County Public Transportation System provides bus service to Tuskegee from surrounding cities. From the Tuskegee Bus Stop, the center is a short taxi or rideshare ride away. A round trip fare within Macon County on the public transportation system is $5. Taxi and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are available in Tuskegee.
Driving

From I-85, take the Tuskegee/Notasulga exit (Exit #38) and follow AL-81 S/Tuskegee Airmen Blvd toward Tuskegee. Continue onto N Main St, then turn right onto W Oak St, and finally turn right onto S Elm St. The center will be on the right. Free on-site parking is available for museum visitors, including motorcoaches and RVs.

The Tuskegee Human & Civil Rights Multicultural Center, also known as the Tuskegee History Center, stands as a poignant reminder of the past and a beacon of hope for the future. Established in 1997, the center is located in Tuskegee, Alabama, and serves as the official welcome center for Macon County. The center's exhibits unearth the complex history of this transformative Southern locale, recounting the history of the different people and cultures that have been a part of this region's struggle for civil rights. The museum preserves and exhibits the histories of Native Americans, European Americans, and African Americans in Central Alabama, as well as the town's development through time. The center was founded to serve as a permanent memorial to the victims and survivors of the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study, conducted between 1932 and 1972. The names of the 623 men used in the study are displayed on the center's floor. The center also highlights the Civil Rights victories of the 1960s and their impact on the state and nation. In 2011, Auburn University partnered with the center on an oral history project recording interviews about the Lee v. Macon County Board of Education case that helped desegregate Alabama schools. In 2013, the center hosted an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of school integration in Tuskegee. The Tuskegee History Center became part of the African American Civil Rights Network in 2022.
