The Southern Museum of Flight, located a few miles from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, is one of the largest aviation museums in the Southeast. Founded in 1966, the museum has grown from a small display at Samford University to a 68,000-square-foot facility housing a remarkable collection of aircraft, artifacts, and exhibits. The museum's collection includes civilian, military, and experimental aircraft, engines, models, photographs, and paintings. Key exhibits include the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame, which honors aviators with ties to the state, and displays dedicated to the Tuskegee Airmen and women in aviation. Notable aircraft on display include a Wright Flyer replica, a Curtis Pusher, a WWII Fokker D-VII, an F-4 Phantom jet, Soviet-built MiGs, and an A-12 Blackbird spy plane. The museum also features a B-25C Mitchell bomber salvaged from Lake Murray.
