Saint Demetrius Cathedral, situated in the heart of Berat, is a testament to the enduring faith and architectural heritage of the region. The original basilica, constructed in the mid-19th century following a devastating earthquake, was dedicated to Saint Demetrius in gratitude for the city's protection. This act of devotion saw people of all faiths contribute to its construction, hoping for continued safety from natural disasters. In 1922, it was officially designated as a cathedral, marking its importance within the Orthodox community. However, during the communist regime, the cathedral was destroyed, and the site was repurposed. With the restoration of religious freedom in Albania, the Orthodox Church, under Archbishop Anastas Janullatos, embarked on a mission to rebuild damaged churches, including Saint Demetrius Cathedral.Construction of the new cathedral commenced in 1994 but faced delays due to the unrest in 1997. Work resumed in 2002, and the new cathedral was completed and consecrated in 2009. The architecture features a basilica style with a bell tower and incorporates elements from Apollonia, including a bust from the 1st-2nd century AD. Inside, visitors can admire a magnificent wooden iconostasis installed in 2010. The cathedral stands as a beacon of faith and a symbol of Berat's rich cultural and religious history.
