Perched on a rocky hill 2.5 kilometers north of modern Himarë, Himara Castle offers a captivating glimpse into Albania's rich past. The site has been fortified since the 8th century BC, with the castle itself dating back to the 4th-5th centuries BC when the area was inhabited by the Chaonians. Throughout its history, Himara Castle has served as a strategic stronghold, witnessing the rise and fall of empires and cultures. Within the castle walls, visitors can explore a network of cobbled streets, some leading to renovated houses, accommodations, and coffee shops. Among the ruins, discover beautiful churches like the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus and the Church of St. Mary Kasopitra, where parts of the ancient wall are preserved. The Greek-Orthodox Church Of All Saints sits at the foot of the castle, next to the main road. The castle's elevated position, approximately 240 meters high, provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. To the west, you can see Livadhi Beach and the Ionian Sea, with Corfu and other islands on the horizon. To the south lies the modern part of Himarë. The Visha and Kole Midhari Canyons and the Ceraunian Mountains can be seen on the other sides.     Getting There

    Walking

    From the center of Himarë, follow the main road (SH8) north for approximately 2.5 kilometers. The walk is uphill and takes around 30-45 minutes. Look for signs indicating 'Kalaja e Himarës'. The castle entrance is near the Greek-Orthodox Church Of All Saints. Save your energy for exploring the castle itself, as the walk is steep.

    Public Transport

    Local buses and furgons (minibuses) run along the SH8 highway. Ask the driver to drop you off at Himara Castle ('Kalaja e Himarës'). From the drop-off point on the main road, it's a short walk to the castle entrance. A single fare should cost around 50-100 Lek (€0.40-€0.80).

    Taxi

    Taxis are readily available in Himarë. A taxi ride from the town center to Himara Castle should cost approximately 500-800 Lek (€4-€7). Agree on the fare with the driver before starting your journey. Taxis can drop you off directly at the parking lot near the castle entrance.
