Discover more about Tirana Castle

Tirana Castle, or the Fortress of Justinian, stands as a significant historical site in Albania's capital. Its history stretches back before 1300, with origins in the Byzantine era. The castle's location marked the intersection of key north-south and east-west roads, forming the nucleus of Tirana. While not much remains of the original structure, the existing 6-meter high walls are primarily from the Ottoman period. These walls were erected by Ahmet Pasha Bargjini in the late 18th century on the ruins of the old castle. In 1798, the Toptani family of Kruja gained control of the castle. Recent restorations have transformed the castle into a tourist attraction, blending historical elements with modern amenities. Inside the castle walls, visitors can explore a variety of restaurants, hotels, and cultural institutions. The area also features a traditional bazaar offering local foods and handcrafted souvenirs, evoking the atmosphere of the Byzantine era. The site is near the Albanian Parliament and Skanderbeg Square.
