Public Transport

From Tirana, take a bus from the Southeast Bus Station towards Elbasan. Ask the driver to drop you off in Petrelë. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. From the center of Petrelë, it's about a 1 km uphill walk to the castle along Rruga Petreles, taking around 20-30 minutes. Bus fare is typically around 200-300 Albanian Lek.

If you find yourself already in Petrelë, you can reach Petrela Castle on foot. From the center of Petrelë, head towards Rruga Petreles. The castle is located at the top of a hill and the walk is about 1 kilometer. It may take you around 20-30 minutes to reach the castle, but the views along the way are worth the effort.

Located in the village of Petrelë, just a short drive from Tirana, Petrela Castle stands as a prominent landmark with a rich history. Originally constructed in the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the castle has been rebuilt over the centuries, with the present structure dating back to the 15th century. Its strategic position, 329 meters above sea level, made it an integral part of the signaling and defense system of Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the castles.During Skanderbeg's fight against the Ottomans, Petrela Castle was commanded by his sister, Mamica Kastrioti, adding to its historical significance. The castle has a triangular shape with two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy stunning views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains.Today, Petrela Castle is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance and scenic beauty. A restaurant inside the castle provides a unique dining experience, allowing guests to enjoy traditional Albanian cuisine while immersed in the castle's ancient atmosphere. The castle is easily accessible from Tirana, making it a perfect day trip for those seeking a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
