Originally constructed in the 6th century AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the castle has been rebuilt over the centuries, with the present structure dating back to the 15th century. Its strategic position, 329 meters above sea level, made it an integral part of the signaling and defense system of Krujë Castle; fires were used to communicate between the castles. During Skanderbeg's fight against the Ottomans, Petrela Castle was commanded by his sister, Mamica Kastrioti, adding to its historical significance. The castle has a triangular shape with two observation towers. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy stunning views of the Erzen valley, rolling hills, olive groves, and surrounding mountains. Today, Petrela Castle is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its historical significance and scenic beauty.
