Ali Pasha's Castle: A Coastal Fortress with a Storied Past

Ali Pasha's Castle, also known as Kalaja e Ali Pashës, is a historical fortress situated on a small island at the mouth of the Vivari Channel, near Ksamil in southern Albania. This strategic location, part of Butrint National Park, offers breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and the surrounding landscape. Originally built by the Venetians in the 15th or 16th century, the castle served as a stronghold to protect the area around Butrint, which was valuable for fishing and farming. The Venetians, who had acquired Corfu in 1386, needed a strategic point to control the access to the strait of Corfu. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands several times due to various conflicts. In the early 19th century, Ali Pasha of Tepelenë, an Ottoman ruler, seized and significantly improved the castle. He rebuilt it in 1819, adding three towers and using it as one of his residences until 1820. Ali Pasha was known for his autonomous rule and control over large parts of southern Albania and northern Greece. Declared a rebel and killed in 1822, the castle still bears his name, a testament to his legacy. The castle itself features a rectangular design with towers at each corner, showcasing a blend of military utility and aesthetic appeal. Its well-preserved structure allows visitors to explore its ancient walls and imagine the lives of those who once inhabited it. The panoramic views from the castle are unparalleled, offering stunning vistas of the Ionian Sea and the lush greenery of Butrint National Park.
