Gjirokastër Museum: A Chronicle of the Stone City

The Gjirokastër Museum, situated inside the imposing Gjirokastër Castle, provides a detailed journey through the region's past. Opened in 2012, the museum is noted for its modern design and engaging presentation of historical narratives and images. The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of periods, beginning with prehistoric times and continuing through the city's founding, Ottoman rule, and the communist era. Artifacts on display include archaeological finds, traditional costumes, and an array of household items that illustrate the lifestyle of Gjirokastër's prosperous families. One of the most striking displays is a captured United States Air Force plane, a relic from the Cold War that symbolizes Albania's complex political history. The museum is housed within the Gjirokastër Castle, which has been a significant landmark since its construction in the 12th century. Over the centuries, the castle has been expanded and renovated, most notably under Ali Pasha of Tepelene in the early 19th century. The fortress includes five towers, a clock tower, a cistern, and two teqe (religious buildings). The castle also serves as a venue for the National Folk Festival, celebrating Albania's rich traditions in music and dance. Visitors can explore the castle's various sections, including the prison and armaments museum. While some exhibits may lack English translations, the main Gjirokastër Museum offers extensive information in English, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors.
