Rozafa Castle: Shkodër's Sentinel

Perched on a rocky hill where the Buna and Drin rivers meet, Rozafa Castle is a must-see historical site in Shkodër. Its origins trace back to the Illyrian era, and it has been a silent observer of conflicts and cultural changes for centuries. The massive stone walls, largely intact, provide sweeping views of the city, Lake Shkodra, and the Albanian Alps, making it a haven for history buffs and photographers alike. The castle is famous for the legend of Rozafa, a tale of sacrifice. According to folklore, the wife of one of three brothers building the castle was walled into the structure to prevent its collapse. She agreed, asking that her right breast, eye, hand, and foot be left free to care for her son. A sculpture near the entrance immortalizes this story. Easily accessible from the city center, the castle is open year-round. Inside, remnants of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman civilizations can be found, along with a small museum detailing the castle's past. The castle has three courtyards divided by walls, defense towers, and outer walls with entry points offering views of Shkodra Lake and the rivers. The best-preserved structure is the Church of St. Stephen, dating back to the 14th century, which was converted into the Mosque of Sultan Fatih after the Ottoman conquest.
