Named in honor of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the 15th-century national hero who resisted the Ottoman Empire, the square is a powerful symbol of Albanian identity and resilience.Throughout its history, the square has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting Albania's complex past. Originally the site of a bazaar, it was transformed by the Austrians in 1917 and later redesigned during the Italian occupation in the 1930s. During the communist era, it was further modified with the addition of monumental buildings. In 2017, a major renovation project created a vast, pedestrian-friendly space, now considered one of the largest in the Balkans.The square is dominated by the Skanderbeg Monument, an imposing equestrian statue that commemorates the national hero.
