Gorica Bridge: A Timeless Icon of Berat

The Gorica Bridge, also known as Ura e Goricës, stands as a testament to Berat's rich history and architectural heritage. This elegant stone bridge gracefully arches over the Osum River, linking the Gorica neighborhood to the city center. The bridge is one of the oldest and most popular Ottoman bridges in Albania.Originally constructed from wood in 1780 during the time of Ahmet Kurt Pasha, the bridge was a vital link for trade and communication. It was rebuilt with stone in the 1920s, giving it the appearance it retains today. The seven-arch structure stretches 129 meters in length and 5.3 meters in width, standing approximately 10 meters above the average water level. The arches give the bridge an elegant look that complements the surrounding landscape.Local legend tells of a time when the original wooden bridge contained a dungeon where a girl was imprisoned and starved as a sacrifice to appease the spirits responsible for the bridge's safety. During a restoration, a sculpture representing a woman's head on a pylon was discovered, adding to the mystical nature of the bridge. Today, the Gorica Bridge is a major tourist attraction, offering picturesque views of the old town, Berat Castle, and the Osum River.
