Discover more about Mesi Bridge

Nestled in the village of Mes, a short distance from Shkodër, the Mesi Bridge (Ura e Mesit, meaning "the bridge in the middle") is a captivating example of Ottoman-era architecture and engineering. Constructed around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Bushati, the local Ottoman pasha, the bridge spans the Kir River and served as a vital link between Shkodër and the town of Drisht, as well as other northern settlements. The bridge is an impressive structure, stretching 108 meters in length, 3.4 meters in width, and reaching a height of 12.5 meters. It features 13 arches, with the largest spanning 21.5 meters, making it one of the longest Ottoman bridges in the region. The bridge was constructed in two phases; the middle arc and the one adjacent to it were built first, followed by the remaining eleven. The use of round, smooth stones and stone plates gives the bridge an intriguing and aesthetically pleasing appearance. Over the centuries, the Mesi Bridge has faced challenges from devastating floods, which have caused damage to its structure. Despite this, the bridge has remained standing, a testament to the strength and solidity of its construction. In recent years, the Albanian Development Fund invested 13 million lekë to improve access to the bridge, allowing tourists to experience its architectural features up close. Today, visitors can walk across the bridge, explore the riverbanks, and admire the tranquil scenery of the Kir River valley.
