Discover more about Saint Demetrius Cathedral

Saint Demetrius Cathedral is a significant landmark in the heart of Berat, a city designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Demetrius, a revered figure in the Christian faith, and stands as a symbol of the city's rich religious history. The original cathedral, built in the mid-19th century, was constructed after a devastating earthquake in 1851. The people of Berat, regardless of their religious affiliation, prayed to Saint Demetrius for protection from future earthquakes, leading to the construction of a church in his honor. This original basilica was destroyed during the communist period and replaced by a party committee. After the restoration of religious freedom in Albania, the Orthodox Church, under the guidance of Archbishop Anastas Janullatos, began rebuilding damaged churches, including Saint Demetrius Cathedral. Construction of the new cathedral started in 1994 but was halted due to the events of 1997. Work resumed in 2002, and the new cathedral was completed and consecrated in 2009. Further enhancements, such as the installation of a wooden iconostasis in 2010 and an electronic bell system in 2016, have since been added. The cathedral's architecture showcases a blend of Byzantine and Orthodox styles, with a majestic façade and ornate details. Inside, visitors can admire exquisite frescoes that depict biblical stories and various saints. The serene atmosphere invites reflection, offering a peaceful retreat from the city. The surrounding area, with its picturesque streets, reflects Berat's diverse history and cultural influences.
