Gorica Bridge: A Timeless Ottoman Landmark

The Gorica Bridge, also known as Ura e Goricës, stands as a testament to Berat's rich history and architectural heritage. Spanning the Osum River, this elegant bridge links the Gorica neighborhood with the UNESCO-listed Mangalem quarter, offering picturesque views of the 'city of a thousand windows'. Originally constructed from wood in 1780 during the Ottoman period by Ahmet Kurt Pasha, the bridge was rebuilt using stone between the 1920s and 1930s. It features seven arches that gracefully extend 129 meters across the river, with a width of 5.3 meters and a height of 10 meters above the average water level. The arches are proportionate and give the bridge elegance, which adapts to the surrounding landscape.Local legend tells a tale of a young woman being buried alive within the original wooden bridge to appease the spirits and ensure its structural integrity. During the restoration of the bridge they found a sculpture, which represented a woman's head on a pylon. While the story may be folklore, it adds to the bridge's mystique and cultural significance.Today, the Gorica Bridge is more than just a crossing point; it's a beloved landmark and a symbol of Berat.
