Discover more about Big Bunker

Along the scenic SH8 coastal road, perched on a slope of the Ceraunian Mountains, lies the Big Bunker, a tangible reminder of Albania's Cold War paranoia. Constructed in the 1970s, under the direction of Enver Hoxha, this massive concrete structure was intended as a military installation capable of withstanding potential invasions. Hoxha's obsession with national defense led to the construction of over 700,000 bunkers throughout Albania, a testament to his isolationist policies. Today, the Big Bunker has been transformed into a tourist attraction, inviting visitors to explore its corridors and contemplate Albania's complex history. While it may appear as just a bunker, without elaborate tunnels or mazes, its imposing presence and strategic location offer a unique perspective on the country's past. The site provides stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, once a source of perceived threat, now a vista of tranquil beauty. Visitors can wander through the bunker, imagining the lives of those who would have sought shelter within its walls. Although the interior may be simple, the experience is both educational and thought-provoking, offering insight into Albania's military history and the societal impact of its isolationist policies. The Big Bunker serves as a powerful symbol of a bygone era, inviting reflection on the country's journey from a secluded state to an emerging democracy.
