    Discover more about Elbasan Castle

Elbasan Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Elbasanit, is a significant historical landmark in the city of Elbasan, Albania. Originally built in the 4th century by the Romans and restored in the 15th century by the Ottoman Empire, the castle has been a pivotal structure throughout the region's history. Initially a Roman castrum called Mansio Scampis, the fortress was strategically positioned along the Via Egnatia, a vital Roman road connecting the Adriatic coast to Byzantium. After the Roman Empire's collapse, the castle was rebuilt in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. In 1466, under Sultan Mehmed II, the castle was reconstructed as a military center to combat Skanderbeg, an Albanian nobleman. The Ottomans named it Ijl-basan, meaning 'the owned fortress,' which evolved into Elbasan. Today, Elbasan Castle is a captivating neighborhood where past and present coexist. Visitors can explore well-preserved walls, towers, and a mix of ancient buildings, mosques, and architectural remnants from Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras. Notable sites within the castle include Sinan Pasha's Turkish bath, the Orthodox Church of St. Mary's Assumption, the King's Mosque (the oldest mosque in Albania), and the Clock Tower. The castle reflects a diverse history, culture, and religion, showcasing Ottoman-style houses, Italian-style flats, and communist-era buildings.
