Discover more about Et'hem Bej Mosque

Rising gracefully in central Tirana, the Et'hem Bey Mosque is an 18th-century icon that narrates themes of Albanian identity. More than just Tirana's most beautiful preserved relic of Ottoman rule, this spiritual sanctuary tells of the country's extraordinary endurance against swirling tides of change through its very structure. Construction began in the late 18th century (around 1791 or 1794) by Molla Bey and was finished in 1819 or 1821 by his son, Haxhi Ethem Bey. The mosque is known for its intricate frescoes, both outside and inside the portico, which depict trees, waterfalls, and bridges – motifs rarely seen in Islamic art. These unique paintings set the Et'hem Bey Mosque apart, as Islamic tradition typically avoids figurative artwork. The mosque's architectural complex includes the Clock Tower of Tirana. The mosque was closed during the totalitarianism of the Socialist People's Republic of Albania but reopened as a house of worship in 1991. This reopening, attended by 10,000 people, marked a milestone in the rebirth of religious freedom in Albania. Today, tours are given daily, except during prayer services, and visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering. The mosque stands on a quadratic foundation, built with stones from the village of Shtish-Tufinë. The interior features a prayer hall covered by a dome, with frescoes that include landscapes and even a depiction of the Süleymaniye Mosque.
