Good Cave (Shpella e Mirë): A Mystical Retreat Near Tirana

Located in the village of Besh-Livadh, near Tirana, Good Cave (Shpella e Mirë besh), also known as Saint George's Cave (Shpella e Shëngjergjit), is a fascinating destination steeped in natural beauty and local legend. The cave is positioned on Mount Brrari, offering scenic views and a tranquil escape. Inside, visitors are greeted by impressive rock formations, including stalactites and stalagmites sculpted over millennia. The cave reaches depths of over 150 meters, with heights varying from 2 to 10 meters. The cave's cool and serene atmosphere provides a striking contrast to the world above. Shpella e Mirë translates to “Good Cave” because the water dripping inside is believed to have healing and magical properties. Containers are placed at the entrance to collect this water, and visitors come to drink and bathe in it, seeking cures for illnesses and protection from the “evil eye”. The cave has long served as a pagan site where rituals are performed, and even today, it is a place where different faiths converge. On Saint George's Day (June 6th), locals gather to spend the night, make sacrifices, and cook food. The surrounding landscape offers scenic walking trails through lush greenery, perfect for birdwatchers and hikers. The trails to the cave can be rocky and uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
