    Skanderbeg Square (Sheshi Skënderbej) is the main plaza in the heart of Tirana, Albania, embodying the nation's spirit and serving as a dynamic gathering place for locals and tourists alike. Named in honor of the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the square spans approximately 40,000 square meters and is dominated by the iconic Skanderbeg Monument, an 11-meter high equestrian statue that replaced statues of the communist dictator Enver Hoxha and Stalin after 1991. Throughout history, the area has undergone numerous transformations. In 1917, the Austrians constructed a public square on the site. During the Albanian monarchy (1928-1939), it featured a roundabout with a central fountain. A statue of Joseph Stalin was later erected where the Skanderbeg Monument stands today. The square has been renovated since June 2017, becoming part of the largest pedestrian zone in the Balkans and earning the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2018. Skanderbeg Square is framed by significant landmarks, including the National History Museum, identifiable by its large mosaic depicting Albanian history. Other notable buildings include the Palace of Culture, the National Opera, the National Library, the Bank of Albania, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, City Hall, and various ministries. These structures showcase a mix of architectural styles, reflecting Tirana's evolution over the years. The square is a lively venue for cultural events, concerts, and art exhibitions, offering visitors a chance to engage with the local community.
