Rodoni Castle: A Coastal Fortress of Albanian History

Rodoni Castle, or Kalaja e Rodonit, is a historical fortress located on the Cape of Rodon (Kepi i Rodonit), a rocky peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea. The castle was originally built by Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, in the 15th century, sometime after the first Siege of Krujë around 1450. Its strategic location provided easy access to the sea and served as a crucial defense point against Ottoman invasions. Construction of the castle, also referred to as Skanderbeg Castle, began in 1450 and was completed around 1452, featuring 400-meter long walls and towers at each corner. Skanderbeg used the castle as a retreat during the Siege of Krujë in 1466, from where he and his family sailed to Brindisi. The castle was thought to be destroyed by Ottoman forces in 1467 but was later rebuilt by the Republic of Venice in 1500. Today, the castle's ruins consist of outer walls and a tower, some of which are submerged due to the corrosive action of the sea.
