Discover more about The Great Mosque of Durrës

The Great Mosque of Durrës, or Xhamia e Madhe, is more than just a place of worship; it's a testament to the city's enduring spirit. Constructed in 1931, it was once the largest mosque in Albania, commissioned by King Zog I to replace a previous Ottoman-era structure. Italian architects designed the mosque, blending Islamic architectural elements with local Durrës influences. During the communist regime in 1967, the mosque was shut down, its minaret torn down, and the building repurposed as a youth center. It suffered further damage in 1979 from an earthquake. However, with the aid of the International Islamic Relief Organization, the mosque was restored and reopened in 1993. Today, the Great Mosque stands as a symbol of Durrës's history and resilience. Its elegant design and graceful minaret are set against the backdrop of Iliria Square, creating a captivating sight. Visitors can appreciate the intricate details of the mosque's architecture and experience the tranquil atmosphere within its walls. The mosque is also called Grand Mosque in order to distinguish it from the Little Mosque – the Ottoman-era Fatih Mosque.
