Old Town Durrës: A Blend of History and Modernity

Old Town Durrës offers a captivating journey through time, showcasing layers of history from ancient Illyrian settlements to Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences. The fortified old city, also known as Durrës Castle (Kalaja e Durrësit), was established in the late 5th century by Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I, a native of Durrës, fortifying it as one of the most protected cities on the Adriatic. These walls were significantly reinforced by the Venetians and Ottomans. Today, about a third of the original wall's length remains, standing approximately 4.6 meters high. A visit to Old Town Durrës isn't complete without seeing the mediaeval city walls and the largest Roman amphitheater in the Balkans. Built in the 2nd century AD, the amphitheater once accommodated up to 15,000 spectators. The site also contains a Christian chapel added in the 13th century, showcasing stunning mosaics. Stroll along Shëtitorja Taulantia, a palm-lined boulevard brimming with shops, cafes, and restaurants. This lively street leads to Sheshi Iliria, the main square, home to the city government and theatre. Behind the theatre lie the remains of a Roman forum with 40 Corinthian columns, believed to be the starting point of the Via Egnatia. Not far from the Venetian Tower, you can find one of the few preserved Ottoman bathhouses in Albania, dating back to the 18th century. For panoramic views, venture up the hill to the Royal Villa, also known as Zog's Villa, built in 1927 for King Zog I. Although the villa is closed to the public and was looted in 1997, the views of the city are magnificent. Old Town Durrës seamlessly blends historical landmarks with modern amenities, offering visitors a rich cultural experience.
