Nestled in the village of Mes, the Mesi Bridge (Ura e Mesit, meaning "the bridge in the middle") is an iconic landmark showcasing Ottoman engineering and architecture. Constructed around 1770 by Kara Mahmud Bushati, the local Ottoman Pasha, the bridge spans 108 meters across the Kir River.The bridge features 13 stone arches, each varying slightly in size, adding to its unique character. Built in two phases, the initial construction included the central arch and an adjacent one, with the remaining 11 arches added later. This strategic construction aimed to connect Shkodër with Drisht and other northern settlements, facilitating trade, military movements, and communication.Today, the Mesi Bridge is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its historical significance and scenic surroundings. The bridge's stone construction, featuring rounded stones and stone plates, is a captivating sight. The surrounding panorama of the Kir River valley enhances its picturesque appeal. While floods have caused some damage over time, the Albanian Development Fund has invested in the site, ensuring safe access for tourists to appreciate this cultural monument. From Shkodër city center, a taxi is the quickest way to reach Mesi Bridge. Taxis are readily available throughout Shkodër. The ride takes approximately 10 minutes and typically costs between $15 and $19. Confirm the fare before starting your journey.
Car
If driving from Shkodër, head northeast towards the village of Mes. The drive is approximately 7.6 km and takes about 10 minutes. Follow the signs for Mesi Bridge once you reach Mes village. Parking facilities are available near the bridge. Driving yourself will cost approximately $1-$2.
Public Transport
To reach Mesi Bridge by public transport from Shkodër, take a local bus or minivan (furgon) heading towards the village of Mes or Boks. These buses may be infrequent, so it's best to inquire locally about the schedule. A bus ticket should cost around 100-200 Lek. From Boks, you can walk or take a taxi to Mesi Bridge, which is approximately 3 kilometers away. A taxi from Boks to the bridge should cost around 300-500 Lek.
