Discover more about Rozafa Castle

Rozafa Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Rozafës, stands as a majestic testament to Albania's rich history. Perched on a rocky hill 130 meters above sea level, it overlooks the city of Shkodër and the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers. This strategic location has been inhabited since ancient times, with the first fortifications constructed by Illyrian tribes as early as the 9th century BCE. The castle's history is layered with influences from various civilizations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. It was an Illyrian stronghold until captured by the Romans in 167 BC. The fortifications visible today are primarily of Venetian origin, with Ottoman contributions as well. Rozafa Castle has been the site of numerous sieges, most notably the Ottoman siege of Shkodra in 1478-1479 and the Montenegrin siege in 1912-1913. The castle is best known for the legend of Rozafa, a tale of sacrifice and devotion. According to folklore, the wife of one of three brothers building the castle was walled into the structure to prevent its collapse. She agreed, requesting that parts of her body remain exposed to care for her infant son. A sculpture near the entrance commemorates this legend. Inside the castle, visitors can explore three courtyards, each containing remnants of different eras. Highlights include the ruins of the Church of St. Stephen, later transformed into the Sultan Mehmet Fatih Mosque, and a three-story Venetian building that houses the Castle of Shkodra Museum. The museum displays archaeological objects and exhibits detailing the castle's 4000-year history. The castle grounds also offer panoramic views of Shkodër, Lake Shkodra, and the surrounding Albanian Alps.
