Discover more about Archaeological Park of Antigonea

The Archaeological Park of Antigonea, located 14 km from Gjirokastra, offers a captivating journey into Albania's ancient past. Founded in 295 BC by King Pyrrhus of Epirus, the city was a testament to his love for his wife, Antigone. Situated on the hill of Jerma, the park provides panoramic views of the Drino Valley. Antigonea flourished as a significant urban center with a well-organized layout in the Hippodamian style, featuring a grid system and Hellenistic architectural elements. Spanning 40 hectares, the city boasted impressive infrastructure, including an agora (marketplace) at the highest point, which served as the heart of its social and economic life. The city was protected by thick walls and included suburban fortifications. Despite its grandeur, Antigonea's prosperity was short-lived. In 167 BC, during the Roman-Macedonian conflict, the city was destroyed by the Romans. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of this violent razing, including burnt ruins. However, Antigonea persisted as a small settlement for centuries, with the construction of an Early Christian church (5th-6th century). Today, visitors can explore the remains of the ancient road system, the agora, a 70-meter long stoa (covered promenade), housing quarters, and the Early Christian basilica with its mosaic floor. The site also features a post-medieval church of St. Michael. The Archaeological Park covers 90 hectares, offering a blend of historical exploration and natural beauty. Visitors can also explore the remains of the abandoned village of Ladovishte near the southern gate.
