    Walking

    Skanderbeg Square is centrally located and easily accessible on foot from most points in downtown Tirana. From the National Art Gallery, walk west along Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, and the square will be directly ahead. Allow approximately 10-15 minutes. No costs involved.

    Public Transport

    Tirana has an extensive bus network. Several bus lines stop near Skanderbeg Square. From Tirana East Gate (TEG), take Bus Line 2 or 8 towards the city center. Ask the driver to let you off near Skanderbeg Square. From the bus stop on the northern edge of the square, buses with signs saying “Kamez” also stop there. A single bus fare costs 40 lek (approximately €0.40).

    Taxis are readily available throughout Tirana. A taxi ride from the Train Station to Skanderbeg Square typically takes around 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. Expect to pay around 500-700 lek (€5-€7).

    Skanderbeg Square, or Sheshi Skënderbej, is more than just a central plaza; it's the beating heart of Tirana, Albania. Named in honor of the national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, who led the Albanian resistance against the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, the square stands as a testament to Albania's rich history and cultural identity.Originally established in the 17th century as a bazaar and marketplace, Skanderbeg Square has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the country's complex and convulsive history. In 1917, the Austrians constructed a public square on the location. During the period of the Albanian monarchy, from 1928 to 1939, the square featured a roundabout with a fountain at its center. Later, during the communist era, the square was redesigned with a series of juxtaposed cultural buildings. After the fall of communism in 1991, the square experienced further changes, including the removal of Enver Hoxha's statue.The square was renovated in June 2017, transforming it into a pedestrian-friendly zone and earning the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2018. The redesign emphasizes pedestrian access, wide visibility, and cultural integration. The square is paved with stones sourced from all over Albania, symbolizing national unity.Today, Skanderbeg Square is a lively hub of activity, hosting cultural festivals, concerts, and public gatherings.
